Authenticity and Vulnerability in Business

One of the most profound points Laura raised was the difficulty in maintaining authenticity in the online space. She noted that the digital world is inherently performative, making it a challenge to show up in ways that are genuinely reflective of oneself. She highlighted the vulnerability that comes with sharing personal beliefs and promoting your business online. The key takeaway here is the importance of continuously working on showing up as your true self, even when it feels challenging.

"For me, one of the biggest challenges has always been, how do I show up in a way that's authentic? The online space is a little bit performative people talk about, you need to be authentic. What does that mean?

Embracing Failure

Laura emphasized that failure is an inevitable aspect of entrepreneurship. What matters is how you adapt and bounce back from it. The way you handle failure can either knock you out or help you course-correct and get closer to your goals. This perspective is essential for any entrepreneur, as it encourages resilience and a growth mindset.

"We all have failure. The biggest challenge in entrepreneurship across the board for anybody is going to be how do you adapt from failure? Do you let it knock you out completely, or do you let it course-correct you into getting a little closer where you want to be?"

The Ego in Delegation

Delegation is a recurring theme in Laura's insights, especially the necessity of letting go of ego. She spoke about how business owners often hold onto tasks because they believe they are the best at doing them. However, releasing these tasks to someone more capable can free up valuable time and mental space, which is crucial for focusing on high-level responsibilities.

"There's a lot of ego in delegation. We hold onto way too much… just letting go of some of that ego stuff, which I've had to do in my agency over the years."

Delegation in Personal Life

Laura also underscored the importance of delegating personal tasks. Simple chores like cleaning, grocery shopping, and yard work can be outsourced to free up time and mental space. This holistic approach to delegation not only boosts productivity but also enhances overall well-being.

"I have someone that cleans my home, I have a child who's in school, and one that's in daycare. There are elements of childcare that I've outsourced in my life."

The Realization of True Delegation Needs

Laura shared a personal story that highlighted the importance of truly understanding and practicing delegation. In March, she broke her leg, making it impossible for her to drive or manage her day-to-day tasks without help. This incident forced her to rely on her support network more than ever before, teaching her an invaluable lesson on the real extent of her delegation needs.

"If you were to break your leg, which I hope you don't do… are there people in your life that you can delegate things to? If you can, I would encourage you to do that so the universe doesn't break your leg."

Freedom Through Entrepreneurship

Laura chose entrepreneurship over corporate jobs mainly because of the freedom it offers—not just in terms of time or location but also creative and mental freedom. This freedom allows her to innovate, experiment, and find solutions on her own terms without being constrained by rigid corporate structures.

"For me, it's freedom of my mind. It's freedom for me to create what I want to create, to think what I want to think, to try things on in a way that allows me to learn and grow."

The Importance of Empowering Your Team

For effective delegation, empowering the people you delegate tasks to is crucial. Laura discussed how giving people the autonomy to handle tasks not only makes the delegation process smoother but also boosts team morale and productivity.

"You can't expect people to read your mind, but how can you empower them in the tasks that they're doing and letting them have some autonomy around it?"

Practical Tips for Delegation

Laura offered practical advice on how to start delegating effectively. First, identify and list all the tasks you handle daily. Then, categorize them by the value they bring to your business. Set realistic dollar values for these tasks to determine which ones are worth delegating. For instance, tasks that can be done by someone else for $15 an hour should be delegated so you can focus on more critical responsibilities.

"I like to look at really building out a list of tasks… what are the tasks that are lower cost, that are easier for me to delegate?"

The Value of SOPs and Training Tools

Laura mentioned the utility of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and tools like Loom videos for effective delegation. Creating these resources might seem time-consuming initially but are invaluable in the long run. They make it easier for anyone to take over tasks seamlessly, saving you time and effort.

"One of the things I love to do if I'm handing off a task is to just record a Loom video of myself actually doing the task and speaking over it."

Community and Continued Learning

Finally, Laura spoke about her community, "This Mother Means Business," aimed at supporting entrepreneurial mothers. This platform provides networking and educational opportunities to help mothers thrive in their dual roles. Laura’s dedication to this cause signifies the importance of community and continuous learning in the journey of entrepreneurship.
